On my first trip to Kauai, I soon heard about the famous Kalalau Trail. I remember hiking the first few miles and being struck by how beautiful it was. I recall hearing somewhere that it supposedly was one of the most difficult trails in the world. The experience was awesome even though I just hiked the first two "touristy" miles to Hanakapiai Beach at the time. Once there, I discovered that, in order to go any further, permits were required. I was intrigued!
On a subsequent trip, I remember hiking out towards Hanakapiai Beach again and coming across a couple hiking back towards the trailhead with big, heavy backpacks on. They were breathing heavy, drenched in sweat, red-faced, and just looked exhausted...! I asked them whether they had hiked the entire trail, and they just mumbled a fatigued "yes" and stumbled on. Somehow at that moment, I thought to myself, "Wow, that seems crazy, but one day I want to do that!" I didn't realize it at the time, but I had just added an item to my bucket list.
This thought stuck with me as I made repeated visits to Kauai over the following years. Once I approached my late 40's, after thinking and reading about the Kalalau Trail more and more, I decided to get serious and make it happen.
After careful researching, planning, and training, I finally made this dream come true and spent four glorious days on the trail and on Kalalau Beach on a solo adventure. These days were simply unforgettable and life-changing for me. While physically challenging, this experience was so exhilarating that I would've hiked right back out after my return to Ke'e Beach had I had the chance.
Since then, I have repeated this incredible adventure and can only hope to go on this pilgrimage again every year.
The experience of the Kalalau Trail is simply extraordinary. This is a truly special place on our planet, one of wonder, beauty, challenge, and rich history. It is here that you can challenge your body and mind and reconnect with yourself and nature.
