Food, Kitchen, and Tools

On a multi-day adventure, you have to consider meal preparation, water treatment, and more. Like with everything else, the right, light-weight tool will make life easier. (Personally, meals in camp and on the beach are my favorite part of the Kalalau experience. Enjoy!)

Steripen Adventurer

This UV light is effective at eliminating harmful microorganisms including leptospira. It has long-lasting batteries and even works in slightly cloudy water.

Grayl Geopress

While a little heavy, the Geopress is super easy to use and very practical. No pumping - just use your body weight to filter.

Lightweight Nalgene bottle

I bring two of these bottles along when I head out on the trail. Inexpensive and much lighter than the regular Nalgene bottles, they're perfect.

LifeStraw Peak Series

As a backup for the Geopress and for emergencies, this small LifeStraw is good to have around. It won't filter out leptospira, but better than drinking untreated water in a pinch.

MSR Piezo Ignitor

I wasn't a big fan of regular lighters and being reliant on gas to light my stove. I found this little guy and it's a great replacement. Also keeps my fingers further away from the flames.

Extra-long Titantium Spork

This thing is great for keeping your fingers clean when eating dehydrated backpacking meals because it's extra long. Also east to keep clean and comes with a cloth case.

Greenbelly Meals

These bars are not the traditional bars; they're full meal replacements and keep you full. One package = 1/3 of your daily nutrients and calories. Super practical.

Benchmade Bugout knife

There are many knives out there. This one stands out due to its low weight and high quality. I also appreciate that part of the blade is serrated.
